Deciduous 6- to 10-ft. shrub bears clusters of scarlet red flowers in spring. Reddish-bronze foliage appears later and matures to a deep, glossy green. Tart, 2-in. long fruit can be harvested in fall to make jams and jellies. Does well in full sun to part shade. Zones 4-8. Size 12-18 in.

Comments: Bright scarlet blooms accented with golden-yellow anthers in the centers are borne close to the stems as the leaves are emerging. Forms an attractive arching shrub with dense sometimes twisted branches. Mainly grown for the beautiful flowers but the hard pear shaped fruit is edible. Quince can be easily sheared to form an attractive hedge or border. The flowering branches also make a dramatic cut flower arrangement.
