Fringe Tree

White Flower Panicles in the Summer

Ornamental small tree adds color to the landscape—and provides food and shelter for wildlife. This low-maintenance tree gets its name from the slightly fragrant, fringelike, 4-8 in. panicles of creamy white flowers that cover the tree in early to midsummer. Its shiny, dark green leaves turn yellow in the fall. Female trees produce grapelike clusters of ¾-in. blue-black fruits that are a food source for birds, and the male trees are said to flower more heavily. Growing 12-20 ft. tall with a 10-15 ft. spread, the Fringe Tree has an upright, spreading habit. It's a good choice for mass planting, in borders or as a specimen plant. Because trees are propagated by seed, their sex is unknown until later. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Zones 3-9.
