Southern Grove Onions
Zones 7-10
It is possible to grow onions in the South! Like many of our favorite crops, gardening in the South is all about choosing the right varieties. Choose onion cultivars that are known to be suitable for warm climates or have a shorter maturity period. Look for heat-tolerant or short-day onion varieties, as they are more likely to perform well in Zones 7, 8, 9 and 10. One way to find the right style of onions for your southern garden? Look for "short day" varieties. These onion sets begin to bul when the day lengthens to 10 to 12 hours, relatively early in the season. That means that you can harvest your onions before the height of summer.
